This placeoffers the strongest strategical points and thefinest site for a naval and coaling station inthe whole Pacific, concerning which the LondonTimes^ in its alarm over the growing prestige ofthe United States in Hawaii, declared, in an appealto Great Britain: The maritime power that holdsPearl River, and moors its fleets there, possessesthe key to the Northern Pacific. Leaving Honolulu January 20,1881, and return-ing October 27th, King Kalakaua made a tour ofthe world, visiting Japan, China, Siam, British.
