AMERICAN ENGINEER. 641 CHART FOR OBTAINING TRACTIVEEFFORTS BY R. POMEROY.* A locomotive tractive effort formula contains four variablesand in the preliminary investigation of a proposed design itnot infrequently is desirable to ascertain the etTect of changesin each or all of them. While the tables available permit a readydetermination of tractive eflfort for exact sizes, it is sometimesnecessary to know the effect of an increase of one-quarter inchin the diameter of the cylinder or the wearing down of the tireswhich would decrease the diameter of the drivers by smallamounts. Furthermore for a complete range, the tabular ar-rangement of this data makes a fairly voluminous view of these facts the accompanying chart has been pre-pared and will be found to give results that are accurate within500 lbs. It is based on a mean effective pressure equal to 85per cent, boiler pressure. In obtaining the tractive effort of an existing locomo
