The Senate on Oct. 10 passed abill providing for the exemption of ships from payment of tollsfor the passage of the Panama Canal,and its subsequent progress was suspend-ed temporarily. The bill provides only for the exemp-tion of ships engaged in the carry-ing trade between Atlantic and Pacificcoast ports, and it is said that its mainobject is to test the feeling of Congressfor the extension of the toll exemption.
