Speech is performedchiefly by the different parts of the mouth, assisted by thecavity of the nose, — the larynx moving only in a small de-gree. When the air passes through the larynx without pro-ducing a tremor, it occasions a whisper. When a personspeaks during inspiration, the voice is thereby very materiallyaltered, and may be made to appear as coming from otherplaces than the mouth of the speaker ; as is the case withthose who call themselves ventriloquists. When the dissector has duly considered these parts, hemay make an incision through the trachea and oesophagusnear the sternum, and they may be pulled forwards so as todissect the back of the pharynx ; or the dissector may deterit until the muscles of the back of the neck have been ex-amined, when the cervical vertebra may be removed whichwill expose the posterior part of the pharynx much better;the cellular substance may then be dissected off, when thefollowing muscles will be brought into view. 118 THE DISSECTORS a. The constrictor pharyngis inferior b. The constrictor pharyngis medium. c. The constrictor pharyngis superior. d. The stylo-pharyngeus. Beneath the three constrictors the palato-pharyngeusmay be seen, and upon removing the mucous membraneof the pharynx, the muscles situated upon the back of thelarynx may be dissected, which the diagram is intended toillustrate. e. The crico-arytenoideus posticus. f. The crico-arytenoideus lateralis. g. The thyro-arytenoideus. h. The arytenoideus The arytenoideus The The The azygos uvula. a. The constrictor pharyngis inferior arises from the sides of thethyroid and cricoid cartilages. The superior fibres, running obliquelyupwards, cover the under part of the following muscle, and terminatein a point; the inferior
