Later he tookup enlisted in the South African Infantryas a Private and served in France until 24 March1918, when he was reported missing andafterwards, killed iii action in the GaucheWood region. On the outbreak ofwar Ewen enlisted inthe Hegained his commissionin the 3rd BattalionRoyal West Kent Regi-ment in July 1916,and was attached to the8th Battalion, servingin France from Sep-tember 1915 onwardstill the time of hisdeath. He was killed whilst commanding A Company of his Regiment near Chaulnes,25 March 1918. Ewen was one of six brotherswho joined the Army in 1914 and 1915, andpossessed all the soldierly qualities which go tothe making of the fine officer. Many wrote theirappreciation of him and of his work in theArmy, which was summed up in the words ofhis CO. : He had done magnificent work inthe very strenuous fighting in which we were en-gaged, he led his men with great skill, braveryand dash, his work while in command of theCompany culminating in the glorious example ofpersonal b
