The premaxillary spine is flat as are the nasals and the remaining skull roof bones, such that the bones of the dorsal aspect of the skull are planar. The spatulate snout is therefore a synapomorphy for Corytophanes- Laemanctus, with homoplasy in the above mentioned taxa. Character 39: crowns of posterior marginal teeth (Fig. 34). This character has been discussed by Etheridge & de Queiroz (1988). Although the outgroup evidence is equivo- cal for "iguanids", Etheridge & de Queiroz (1988) treat the tricuspid tooth crown as primitive. From the primitive condition two independent transformation series are hy- pothesized: one involves the broadening of the tooth crown and an increase in cuspation; the alternate transformation involves the reduction and eventual loss of accessory cusps. In order to asses the polarity of this character at the ingroup/outgroup node, this character is split into two characters, each representing alternate transforma- tion series (Characters 39A and 39B).. 1 mm I I Laemanctus longipes Fig. 34: Morphology of posterior marginal teeth of Basiliscus, Corytophanes and Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Bonn, Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut und Museum Alexander Koenig
