A 1930's illustration showing an Archimedes spiral screw being used to empty a ship's hold full of water. Archimedes aka Archimedes of Syracuse ( circa 287-212 BC) was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and inventor who is known for inventing the Archimedes Screw pump and other innovative engineering objects. He also studied water displacement, levers, gravity, pulleys and general mechanics. The term Eureka (I've discovered it) is attributed to Archimedes
