A rhyming verse emphasises the high cost of living and that savings could be made at the Co-op (CWS or Co-operative Wholesale Society). The Co-operative Group (Co-op) has developed over the years from the merger of co-operative wholesale societies and many independent retail societies. Its roots can be traced back to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, established in 1844. This Society was based on the Rochdale Principles – which notably introduced the idea of distributing a share of profits according to purchasers through a scheme which became known as the dividend or ‘Divi’. By 1872 many similar, individual societies joined up to form the 'Co-operative Wholesale Society' (CWS) and it was wholly owned by the co-operatives which traded with it.
