Winter weather in the first part of March has served to retard the flow of mail orders, but everybody in the mail- order business is busy. After having sold over three million gladiolus bulbs of his own growing, Jelle Roos, of Milton, Mass., has ac- quired the stock of W. E. Woodward & Son, Saxon, Mass., consisting of over two million bulbs. The exportation of seeds from Den- mark still is under special government license, but Hjalmar Hartmann & Co., Copenhagen, say they expect the seed trade soon will be following its normal course again. The 1918 crop in Denmark was grown under most unfavorable con- ditions. Cabbage was only one-third to three-quarters of a normal yield. The first importations of the 1918 crop of Japanese hardy lilies, such as Lilium auratum and L. speciosum, have arrived in this country. There are not nearly enough of these to go around and many will be disappointed, those familiar witi the situation say. The larger sizes, especially, are short, A few cases of longiflorum have arrived but are in hid- ing. » Captain Ralph B. Howe, who has been in the Quartermaster's Corps, stationed at Fort Bliss and Fort Sam Houston, re- turned to Chicago March 10, having been discharged from the army. He wiU re- sume his work with the W. W. Barnard Go. While in the service Captain Howe was in charge of motor transportation and re- pair work and later was appointed buyer of forage for several army camps in the southwest. The British horticultural trades' press is felicitating the country on the fact that England is appropriating a considerable part of the Russian seed demand pre- viously supplied by Germany.
