ce cathedral, Cattedrale dell'Assunta, in Italy's Calabria

Once dominated by the Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Gerace derives its name from the Greek "Jerax" meaning sparrow hawkas it sits, like a bird of prey perched high on the impervious rocks above the Ionic coastline of Calabria in southwest Italy, The town's plan is of medieval origin and centered around the monumental 11th century Cathedral dell'Assunta. This is the largest sacred building in Calabria and was consecrated in 1045. There are three naves each with 13 columns and a central altar leading to the crypt.
