The Market. Flowers are gradually becoming more abundant, thanks to a spell of compara- tively mild weather and the exception- ally clear skies we continue to enjoy. Willi the ground frozen hard, ice on ponds and lakes, twenty inches or more in thickness, and no tying up of traf- fic so far from heavy snows, we feel glad we are living in a favored part of America and that "we can enjoy many winter sports without being subjected to the fogs, tornadoes, killing frosts and torrential rains which have combined to make life miserable over large parts of California and Florida this winter. The flower trade is in a fairly healthy condition, although some flowers are beginning to arrive in unwieldy quanti- ties. Roses continue to do well and prices have declined little from a week ago. Carnations are inclined to sag a little, but have held uji remarkably well for over a montli. Violets are somewliat less expensive, but a large part of the pick is being held back for St. Valen- tine's day, for which day's trade retail- ers are preparing more heavily than ever. Pansies are fine and increase in poj)ularity each season. There are wide ranges of prices on sweet peas, the best with long stems be- ing $3 to $5 per hundred, while the poorer grades go as low as that much per thousand or even less.
