The four fundamental operations for rational algebraicexpressions; factoring, determination of highest commonfactor and lowest common multiple by factoring; fractionsincluding complex fractions, ratio and proportion; linearequations; radicals, including the extraction of the squareroot of polynomials and of numbers; exponents, includingfractional and negative (2) Quadratic equation, binominal theorem, and progres-sions. One-half unit. Simple cases of equations with one or more unknown quan-tities that can be solved by the method of linear or quadra-tic equations. Problems depending upon quadratic equations. The binominal theorem for positive integral exponents. The formulas for the 4th term and the sum of the termsfor arithmetic and geometric progressions, with applica-tions. b. Plane Geometry.—One unit. The usual theorems and constructions of good text-books,including general properties of plane rectilinear figures; thecircle and the measurements of angles; similar polygons;areas; regular polygons and the measurement of the circle. The solution of numerous original exercises, including lociproblems. Application to the mensuration of the line and plane sur-faces. c. Solid Geometry.—One-half unit.
