SHROPSHIRE. S7 days, and fix fairs, held on the Friday before theii3th of February, the Friday before Good-Fri-jcay, the firft Friday after May-day, the 5th ofJuly, the 9th of September, and the 13th of No-vember, for horned cattle, fheep and horfes. Theday preceding the three laft fairs, is for fheep andjfwine. Clun, a village fix miles fouth by eaft of Bi- fhops caftle, was formerly the principal tov^n ofthe hundred; and a little to the north of it is a,caille, w^hich, as well as the town, obtained theI name of Clun, from the river Colun, or Clun, on1 which the village is feated. This caftle was builtiabout king Stephens time, by William Fitz Al-|]an of Clun, who became poftefTed of this lord-fhip in right of his wife Ifabel de Say. This fa-mily was many years remarkable for their greateftates and dignity, and at length the earldom ofArundel came to them by Thomas Fitz Allan,who was alfo lord treafurer, and died in 1416.
