The less heavily shaded area betweenthe 10 per cent line and the zero line means that on an averagethe deaths in months having any of the combinations of tem-perature and humidity falling between these lines range fromthe normal to not more than 10 per cent below it. The nextlighter strip indicates conditions under which deaths rangefrom normal to 10 per cent more than the normal, and so lighter the shading the greater the number of deaths, andthe less the vitality and energy. The practical use of thediagrams may be illustrated by an example. Suppose, forinstance, that we want to find what degree of health we mayexpect in a month having an average temperature of 50° fornight and day together and a mean
