Alert wild turkey hen keeps watch over half-grown chicks feeding in tall grass

Wild turkeys are found throughout the United States, as well as northern Mexico. This large game bird flocks and forages in and near woodlands, forests, field edges, and roadsides. Chicks follow the hen, but receive no specific care. As the chicks grow, several hens and their broods will flock together. They can fly, and are often found in high treetop roosts near sundown. Turkeys are very vocal, the hens and chicks exchanging clicks, chucks, hums, and of course, the famous male gobble. Turkeys are herbivorous to omnivorous, eating mostly seeds, nuts, and some fruits, but will supplement their diet with insects, snails and salamanders.
