The original portrait of Nikolai Gogol was painted in Italy in 1841 as a gift to his mother Maria Gogol-Yanovskaya. This painting was lost during World War II. Only a copy from this portrait painted by the same artist from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, is known since then.
