ARTHUR MERRILL CLARK was bornat Landaff, New Hampshire, August 4, 1833, son ofDaniel and Mary (^Merrill) Clark. His parentsboth sprang from New England families. He at-tended the common schools of his native state tillhe was sixteen years of age. He then entered theSeminary and Collegiate Institute at Newbury, Ver-mont, where he was graduated in 1853. He taughtfor a year and then came to Michigan as Principal. ARTHUR MERRILL CLARK of Schools at I^exington. He held this position forfive years and then turned to commercial 187s he disposed of his business and becameGrand Lecturer of the Grand Lodge, of F. and A. Michigan. He held this office till igoi and thenresigned it on account of failing health. He wasmarried August 16, 1855, at Stowe, Vermont, toMary E. Robinson. Four children were born ofthis union : Ellen Haywood; Charles Sinclair;Arthur N. ; and Howard R. The last two died ininfancy. The mother died July 27, 1862. He was married a second time, at Littleton, New Hamp-shire, September 8, 1863, to Martha Hale, by whomhe had two sons, Winthrop W., now of Lexington,and Arthur H., the latter dying in infancy. Themother died August 22, 1896. January 11, 1898,he was married to Emma Church Alford, who sur-vives him. He died at Lexington, October 27,1903.
