The height of the body is contained nearly six times in the total length (without caudal), the length of the head thi-ee times and three- fourths. Head much depressed, much broader than high, its greatest width being equal to its length without snout. The teeth on the palate are in two pairs of patches, which are confluent, or separated by very narrow interspaces; the vomerine pair is only half as large as that of the palatine bones. Six barbels ; those of the maxillaries extend to the end, the outer ones of the man- dible to the middle of the pectoral fin.
