At the age of fourteen, hehad become a very competent landsurveyor, and in 1818 he accompaniedhis father, as assistant engineer, onthe boundary survey between theInited States and Canada, from thenorthwest head of the Connecticutriver to the Bay of Fundy. Whilethus employed, he made an inde-pendent survey of Lake Temiscouattaand the route down that lake by theMadawasca and St. Johns Rivers tothe Madawasca settlement; and hadsole charge of the necessary astro-nomical observations and Hon. Edwin ierry Johnson. 150 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. He was liis fathers assistant in various engineering and surveying pro-jects until January, 1823, when he entered the Academy. He graduatedwith honor in 1825. He was tutor in Mathematics from 1823 to 1825; in-structor in Mathematics, , and assistant professor of NaturalHistory at the same time, and professor of Mathematics and Civil Engineer-ing, 1826-1829. He accompanied the corps of cadets on their march toPlattsbiu-g in 1824; Washington, D. C, in 1826; and to Niagara Falls in 1827,writing a sketch of each march, which was afterward published in pamphletform. In 1825, wlaile at home in Bui-lington, he drilled a company for the recep-tion of Lafayette, who visited the place that year.
