A father and his young daughter seen on the helm of their narrow boat at the Rickmansworth Canal Festival. DAVID MANSELL
A father and his young daughter seen at the helm of their narrow boat as part of the large numbers of historic narrow boats gathered on the Grand Union Canal at Batchworth Lock in the Herfordshire town of Rickmansworth as part of the Rickmansworth Festival held annually in May. The Rickmansworth Waterways Trust that organises the canal festival weekend event has a canal centre at Batchworth Lock where it has a modern education and recreational facilities, attracting around 15,000 visitors each year. Large numbers of school children visit the canal centre as part of their National Curriculum Key Stages 1 and 2, learning about the history and culture of the people who built and worked on the canals.
