Semiramis was nurtured by doves until she was found (pictured here) by the royal shepherd Simmas.

According to the first century Greek historian Diodorus Siculus, Semiramis was a legendary Assyrian queen, who came to rule Babylon. Her mother, the fish-goddess Derketo of Syria, abandoned her at birth and Semiramis was nurtured by doves until she was found (pictured here) by the royal shepherd Simmas. She later married a general in the army of King Ninus, founder of Nineveh, who fell in love and took her as his wife. At his death, she ruled as queen regnant. The illustration dates to 1915 and is by Ernest Wallcousins.
