HARVESTING ROUGHAGEThe roughage should be stored in such a manner that itwill keep green as long as possible. In my locality nearlyevery one who does not turn his stock into a field cuts 94 LATE CABBAGE the roughage with tobacco shears (see Fig. 26), and throwsit into piles about the size of a large haycock. (Fig. 27.) The work should be done if possible before the rough-age freezes very much, as freezing injures its keeping qual-ities. At the same time it is best not to pile the roughage. A common three-tined pitchforkis the handiest tool to pile with. It also aids the pilingif the leaves are not broken from the plants any morethan is necessary. HARVESTING CABBAGE AND ROUGHAGE 95 Turning stock into a field of roughage always seemedwasteful to me. The stock will waste as much as theywill eat. If it is intended to adopt this way of feeding, itis preferable to fence off a small portion of the field at atime, and let the stock clean this up before giving rangeto any more. AMOUNT OF ROUGHAGE PER ACRE On one acre of cabbage that cut 20 tons of heads, it isquite safe to say that there will be 15 tons of no thinking dairy man or sheep raiser will wastethis amount of feed. If it is not intended to use the roughage for feed, p
