Temple at Philae, Egypt. The complex of temples at Philae was built over a period of 800 years from around 700 BC. This is the temple dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis. This is an entrance structure known as a pylon. Carvings on the walls represent the gods and pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Isis (lower centre) is shown wearing a sun symbol between horns. The inner courtyard and its columns are seen through the entrance (right). The temple is made of sandstone. From 1977-1980, the temples of Philae were rescued from the rising waters of the Nile (rising due to the Aswan High Dam) and rebuilt on a higher island nearby.
