Here the child Arthur is given to Merlin (left), who, in turn, gives Arthur to Sir Ector, who raises him.

In Arthurian legend, Merlin was the great court magician. Here the child Arthur is given to Merlin (left), who, in turn, gives Arthur to Sir Ector, who raises him. Arthur's father was the king Uther Pendragon but he became irresponsible. Merlin had used his magic to bring about Uther's fathering of Merlin and so sought to protect Arthur and raise him to be king. This 1917 illustration is by English book illustrator Arthur Rackham.
