Eugene Pierre Godard (1827-1890), French aeronaut. Between 1845 and 1890, Godard constructed about 18 hot air balloons, 50 gas balloons and made about 1500 ascents in a dozen countries in Europe and the Americas. He established several world records for altitude, distance and time. In 1867, he made a number of scientific ascents with the French astronomer Camille Flammarion. During the 1870-71 siege of Paris he organised a balloon air-mail service.
