The medieval Castillo de Loarre, at Loarre, Huesca, Aragon, Spain. The castle was built in the early 1000s AD by King Sancho III of Navarra as a fortress and royal residence. It is one of the oldest castles in Spain. Its location in the foothills of the Pyrenees was an almost impregnable rocky outcrop about 1,070 m (3,510 ft) above sea level, commanding a large area of the borderlands between Christian and Muslim territories. It was enlarged in the late 1000s by King Sancho Ramírez I of Aragon, who used it as the base for his successful conquest of Huesca.

Loarre, Huesca, Aragon, Spain: the formidable Castillo de Loarre, here seen from the southwest, was built in the early 1000s AD by King Sancho III of Navarra as a fortress and royal residence. It is one of the oldest castles in Spain. The location chosen for the castle in the foothills of the Pyrenees was an almost impregnable rocky outcrop about 1,070 m (3,510 ft) above sea level that commanded a large area of the borderlands between Christian and Muslim territories. It was enlarged in the late 1000s by King Sancho Ramirez of Aragon, who installed a community of Augustinian canons in the castle before using it as the base from which to launch his successful conquest of Huesca.
