The interorbital septum of Photodilus is notso thick as in Strix, but, 011 the other hand, not so thin as inother owls, as, for example, Bubo. The prefrontals, althoughnot so swollen as in Strix, are not nearly so flattened as they 1 Absent in Spcotyto; cf. SHUFELDT, Notes on the Anatomy of SweatytoCJonrn. Morpli. iii. 18S.), p. 122. - See for certain details of skull structure PARKER, Linn. Trans. (2), i. p. 248 STRUCTURE AND CLASSIFICATION OF BIRDS are in Bubo, where, as already explained, they are thinplates, hardly thicker than a piece of paper. So far Photo-dilus agrees with Strix ; but there are points in which theskull of this aberrant owl is nearer to the bubonine sectionof the order. It has not the occipital convexities which areso striking a feature of the skull of Strix. Finally Pliotodiliisis strigine in the non-extension over the occcipital region ofthe temporal fossse, which do so extend in many of theBubonidae. In Strix there is but one notch on either side
