After serving as a sergeant in the was trained under the Commonwealth Joint Air Training Plan and commissioned in 1941. During his service with the SQuadron, Wing Commander Davenport has been four times decorated. In May 1943, he was awarded the for taking part in operations against some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany including Hamburg, Essen and Dortmund, as well as in minelaying operations. Early in September 1942 he was captain of an aircraft which flew to a North Russian base and took part in a patrol over the Barents Sea. While in Russia he acted as flight commander and by his example gained the confidence and respect of all personnel. In the citation to his DSO awarded in June 1944, Wing Commander Davenport was said to have particpated in many attacks against enemy shipping with valuable results. In the following September he won a Bar to the DFC., and in January of this year he was awarded the George Medal for outstanding bravery in rescuing the pilot from the blazing cockpit of his Beaufighter after it had crashed.
