William Herschel Telescope (WHT). The shielding segments have unfolded to reveal the WHT's primary mirror (lower centre). The telescope will make observations through the opening in the dome (background). The WHT is part of the Isaac Newton Group of telescopes at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. It is one of the largest optical telescopes in Europe. Photographed in 2006.
