A group of five young Sri Lankan boys sit around in a Colombo temple

Theravada Buddhism is the main religion of Sri Lanka coming from India in 247 BC. Sri Lanka has approximately 20,000 Buddhist monks and they make up an important part of Sri Lankan life with monks sitting in the parliament. Young boys are chosen to be monks if they show particular interest in religion and sometimes come form poor families as the temples offer access to education.
