One should be able to judge fairly well regarding the surplus capacity of a boiler by noting the ease with which it maintains the desired temperature in the present houses; in fact, a better idea might perhaps be obtained in that way than from an empirical estimate. However, using the customary calcula- .tion for the capacity per horse-power, it is probable that one additional house could be heated readily, while by crowd- ing the boiler up to its full capacity, whenever it is zero or less, a range of six houses might be handled by a sev- enty horse-power boiler. The chimney should extend at least forty feet above the point where the smoke flue enters, and fifty feet would be better. The draft in the chimney with which the hot water boilers are connected Could be improved by adding ten feet to its height. Another improvement ?^"ould be to connect the flue having the poorer draft about two feet higher. The cliimney may be too small.
