In the firstplace we were already overdue, according to the timeallotted to our journey, and in the second place therewere all kinds of rumours current which were creditedby Europeans as well as negroes, and which made itquite clear that an expedition into the heart of theMaka district was not to be thought of. The above-mentioned rumours referred to a Europeanagent of an English factory who was said to have beenmurdered and eaten five days before my arrival in.
