Europe Italy Piedmont Turin Valentino's Park The Castle of Valentino The Castle of the Valentino in Turin is an historic building, located in the Valentino park on the banks of the River Po is now a branch of the Polytechnic of Turin, and houses the University of Architecture. The old castle was bought by Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, Duke of Iron Head, on the advice of Andrea Palladio. This structure was home to noble families like the Saintmerane, the Stork, the Pacelli and Calvi, who bought six rooms in the castle. The origin of its name is uncertain. The first document in which appears the name is Valentinium of 1275, some traces its name to St. Valentine because the relics of this saint, martyr of the '200 youth are preserved since 1700 in a crystal casket in the church of St. Vitus ( on a hill overlooking the Parco del Valentino) moved here after the destruction of a church near the present park. Some scholars argue that, in a remarkable blend of worldly and religious memory, it was usually a time to celebrate in a river park in Turin, on the 14th February (Valentine's Day hours) a party where every gallant lady called his rider Valentino. The castle owes its present form to Madama Reale, the young Maria Cristina of Bourbon (wife of Victor Amadeus I of Savoy and the daughter of Henry IV, first Bourbon king of France branch). Just look at France, the style of this magnificent building: four towers surround the building shaped like a horseshoe, with a large courtyard to the marble floor. The two-story mansard roof (only false floors) are typically transalpine and all the architectural style reflects the tastes of the young princess. The work took nearly 30 years, from 1633 to 1660 on projects of Carlo and Amedeo di Castellamonte Duchess Maria Cristina lived here since 1630 and admire the frescoes of Isidoro Bianchi Campione d'Italy and the stucco of Pompey and his sons Francis. And she has taken the scenic entrance arch on the facade of the Arms of Savoy.
