The Caldera of Las Cañadas, Teide National Park, Tenerife, was formed when a vast volcano collapsed into the sea 160,000 to 220,000 years ago. Effectively the whole top of the island disappeared, leaving the mountainous cliff along the far edge of the photograph . The cones of Mt. Teide and Mt Viejo formed over the last 160,000 years.
