Pilonidal abscess treatment. Silver nitrate being applied to granuloma tissue in the anal cleft of a 19 year old man. The granuloma, a mass of tissue that can form at the site of an infection, formed after an operation to excise a pilonidal abscess. Silver nitrate is a caustic agent that destroys the tissue. A pilonidal abscess is caused when a hair grows into the skin and becomes infected.
