Terra Nova in New Zealand. Steam and sailing ship 'Terra Nova' in harbour in New Zealand for the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition after the ship that supplied and brought the explorers to Antarctica, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. The ship arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand on 29 October 1910, departing from Port Chalmers on 29 November 1910. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole.
