Light Railways.—In cases of very large estates, or wheretwo or more estates belonging to the same company adjoineach other, light railways for the transport of latex, goods andmaterials are of the utmost use. What is known as the Decau-ville system is the most easily laid down, and, generally, theleast expensive. The railway simply consists of two railsscrewed down to light iron sleepers. All that has to be doneis to deposit the sleepers on the ground, at distances of about acouple of yards from each other, and screw down the rails toadjustable brackets with iron bolts. These railways are ex-tremely common in Sumatra, especially on tobacco TAPPING-KNIVES AND UTENSILS i8r which are very large, and where ground is left fallow for anumber of years after cultivation. There the convenience ofhaving a railway system which can be laid down or lifted upby a few coolies is much appreciated. The mono-rail system consists of a single rail along whichlight cars are run. The first cost for the rails is some-what cheaper, but is somewhat discounted by the necessity forspecial cars, and, unless loads are very light, by the difficultyin balancing. The system, however, is in use in many landsand must be found to have advantages. In hilly country, or where there are rivers or ravinesto be crossed, wire-rope carriers are very useful, simple towork, and by no means high in cost. These are employedfor a great variety of purposes in nearly every country inthe world. For the conveyance of latex from h
