AEC Q4Q Single Deck Omnibus - 1935 to 1950s. Red London Transport livery Route 218 via Walton-on-Thames - Scale Model

Associated Equipment Company traded as AEC from 1912 to 1979. This AEC 4Q4 - not be confused with it's fleet number Q6 shown on the bus - ran between Kingston Bus Station and Staines via Walton-on-Thames in Surrey England on route 218. London Transport bought 100 4Q4 in 1935 as its standard single deck bus. Designed by John Rackham it had a single engine, mounted behind the front wheels on the drivers side (driver sat at right when viewed from rear of bus for driving on the left of the road) and driving a transmission train mounted outside the offside chassis frame to a differential offset on the rear axle which needed single rear tyres (tires). This version had mid-mounted doors. With rounded bodywork by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co and lack of front mounted radiator the bus appeared revolutionary at the time.
