Therival faction of the Neri, however, hadgot the upper hand in the city, and inthe usual fashion of the time were burn-ing the houses of their rivals and slayingthem in the open street. In Dantesabsence his enemies obtained a decree of. DANTE banishment against him, coupled with aheavy fine, a sentence which was soonfollowed by another condemning him tobe burned alive for malversation andpeculation. From this time the poet be-came, and to the end of his life remained,an exile. He has told us himself how hewandered through almost all partswhere this language is spoken, and howhard he felt it to climb the stairs andeat the bitter bread of strangers. Dur-ing this period he is said to have visitedmany cities, Arezzo, Bologna, Sienna,etc., and even Paris. In 1314 he foundshelter with Can Grande della Scala atVerona, where he remained till 1318. In1320 we find him staying at Ravennawith his friend Guido da Polenta. In September, 1321, his sufferings and wan-derings were ended by death. He wasburied at Ravenna, where his bones stilllie. His great poem, the Divine Comedy,written in great part, if not altogether,during his exile, is divided into threeparts, entitled Hell, Purgatory, andParadise. The poet dreams that hehas wan
