Submarine Warning


This submarine warning, dated January 25, 1918, came from Lisbon and was received by an American yacht. World War I was still raging (armistice signed November 1918). The French text translates: All Allied Merchant Vessels, All Allied War Ships: Avis de guerre (French for: "warning of war"), Ships making their way along the Spanish coast ought to be aware that within three miles of the coast active submarines are present between the Canaries and the coast of Africa.
