O Vertical and horizontal center lines should run through rivets. Fig. U Rivets and Spacing II Most of the riveting in the shop isdone with a machine and much of thefield rivets are driven by the samemethod, too. Machine driven rivets have usuallythe same form for both heads, but occa-sionally a cone or even the pointed headare found. The proportions Fig. 15 shown arebased on the diameter of the body, thatis, would mean x d. The riveter then forms the other headbut care must be exercised in finish-ing that he not strike it to cold for fearthat the head will fly ofif. When the rivet is to be extended theJ^ or ^ or ^/^ as indicated by the signsthe depth of the hole for countersink-ing need not be so much in the latteras in the former case. Of course there is a wide difference. hlflND Rivrnr/6 SNAP niveriiYft Fig-Rivet holes are always punched 52 to?h larger than the rivet to be used andthe squeezing of the hot rivet fills upthe space. With careful men to lay out andpunch the work the parts go togetherwithout much difficulty but to bring twoholes in line which are slightly off cen-ter, a drift pin may be needed which ishammered or wedged into the holes todraw the metal enough to permit a rivetto be inserted. Fig. 16, but the rivetnever fills the hole perfectly. In riveting up work a heater preparesthe rivet to proper heat then gives it toa helper who puts it in place where itis held by the riveter for an instancewhile the helper places a dolly baragainst its head.
