Painted Shroud Fragment, Ptolemaic or Roman Period, 1st century BC–1st century AD, From Egypt, Linen, gesso, paint, H. cm (14 1/2 in); W. 31 cm (12 3/16 in.); Framed: H. cm (17 1/8 in.); W. cm (14 3/8 in.); D. cm (1 5/8 in.), As wife and sister of Osiris, Isis and Nephthys were twinned in funerary beliefs. These heads of the two goddesses come from a single linen shroud, which probably showed them raising their arms in a gesture of care and reverence on either side of the frontal, mummified image of Osiris
