F\ POULTRY FANCIER 429. is the cheapest time of the year to makea start, as nearly all* breeders advertiseeggs in June and sometimes by the mid-dle of May at half price, and also breed-ers can be obtained at a big reduction,and can be bred from some this season,and will make excellent breeders anotherseason. Often better eggs are obtained at thistime than earlier in the season, as thebreeders are through using eggs fortheir own hatching, and you are apt toget eggs from their best stock. Thenagain, while it is harder to get these latefellows up in size, they generally excelthe earlier ones in points. Just why thisis we do not know, but we have found itto be the case every year when we havegotten out late chicks. This is not noticeable until fall, buteach year we found an improvement inthe late chicks in color over the early onesfrom the same breeders. For the winter shows late pullets arejust in the right condition, as the earlierones will have started to laying and goneby their best show condition. Hens are
