View, to Bernauer Strasse, border strip archaeological windows, Border Wall 75 dividing Bergstrasse, Berlin Wall Memorial

An information panel near this archaeological exhibit reads: 'Bergstrasse was created in 1752 and as of 1945 it crossed the sector border at Bernauer Strasse. The border was guarded by the East Berlin police even before the Wall was built. Bergstrasse has been divided since 1961. It was blocked off with barbed wire on August 13; later a wall was built. Until 1989 around 300 streets were blocked by the Berlin Wall. Today, Bergstrasse is the only street in Berlin still divided by it.' As the wall evolved between 1961 and 1989 the border strip, and any old remains within it, were covered in sand. The metal poles in the background mark the line of the Border Wall 75, still dividing Bergstrasse from Bernauer Strasse. The archaeological windows in the shot show the remains of the old Bergstrasse, the foundations of the border strip brick wall of the Sophien Cemetery, old tomb remains of the Sophien Cemetery and the foundation remains of a bordet strip gaurd house.
