Portrait of the Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). Freud, together with other neurologists, established the study of psychiatry as a separate medical discipline. He believed that the human mind contains conscious and unconscious levels. In the latter, painful memories, wishes and desires of which a person is ashamed are stored and kept repressed. Freud believed that the unconscious level may be unveiled by dream analysis. In 1905 he published his theory on infantile sexuality and how it could persist into adulthood causing sexual disorders and affecting many other aspects of life.
