Attained size of the other three species, unlike Douglas-fir, at age 20 did not bear such a strong relation to planted spacing (fig. 22). The of hemlock tended to increase only slightly with increased spacing, and the variation around the trend was much greater than for Douglas-fir. Spruce and cedar both exhibited an irregular pattern relative to spac- ing, perhaps because of weevil damage and deer browsing. Growth of both species was apparently depressed by close spacing (arcs 1 -6), but it was little affected by spacing beyond arc 6 ( spacing). 39.
