Smock's wife, Cynthia D. "Cindy" Lasseter, was also taken to a separate police car. The couple were cited for trespassing, and asked to leave. The preachers had been preaching to students near Woodburn Hall for several hours, and spoke to students in descriptive terms about sexuality, religion, and other subjects. As Smock began using phrases such as, "build the wall," and expressing his support for United States President Donald J. Trump, a group of students began to surround him, and the mood of the group surround him changed from amusement and mockery, to a more threatening tone of derision and disgust, and that's when members of the IU police department moved in to peacefully defuse the disturbance. Earlier in the day police had been called to the scene after a confrontation involving at least one person, and the preachers, and police discussed in scanner traffic detaining the couple, and moving them to another location to talk to them. A group of at least 100 students had been surrounding the couple, and at least four had moved into a zone of a few feet from Smock. For a while police stayed back, and let the couple preach. The couple are widely known on campus for preaching to students, and had been on campus several times in the past few days.
