The first is that of COMMON UNSOUNDNESSES. 161 Fig. a horse with well-shaj)ed hocks naturally, but whichhas put out a curb. The second is of a horse withnaturally curby hocks, but whichhave not developed into a de-cided curb. The third is the legof a curby-hocked horse loithcurbs. It will be seen that in mydrawings the hind leg is morebent under the horses body inthe two curby-shaped hocksthan in the good one. The reason for this is, thatas far as my own observationhas gone, I have found thatcurby-shaped hocks are almost always (when theyexist), found in conjunction with a bent formationof hind leg. And this I think is likely to be the case, for thestrain on the back sinews of the horses hind legmust be much greater in proportion to the weightimposed on it when the bone of the hind leg is in aslanting position than when it is vertical. In one case the bone will sustain the wholeweight, if required, without the assistance of thesinew. In the other case the bone by itself wouldpractically not support any weight at all.
