Researchers at the Rocky Mountain Experiment Station have been looking for a way to get better measures of both economic and noneconomic outdoor recreation benefits. Survey research techniques have been developed to identify the reasons why different types of people interested in outdoor recreation decide to participate in particular activities, and to quantify the benefits these same people feel they receive. Research has led to the development of an outdoor recreation resource inventory and management system. The system can be used to map public lands to show which areas can best be managed to provide specific types of recreation opportunities.
