False colour transmission electron micrograph of an Adeno virus, cause of infection to the upper respiratory tract, the symptoms of which resemble a common cold. The virus contains double-stranded (DNA) surrounded by a protein capsid (coat),which is composed of 252 capsomers (subunits seen as tiny ovals) arranged into an icosahedron, or 20 faced figure. 12 of these capsomers are surrounded by five neighbours & are called pentons. They consist of a base and a spikelike projection (seen here). To reproduce viruses must take control of the genetic machinery of another cell (in this case animal cells). Mag: X29,200 at 35mm size. Original is BW print m055/013
